GOAL 5 – GENDER EQUALITY

ALT strives for gender equality and diversity, offering equal opportunities for study, work, self-development and communication. 21% of ALT students are women. Programs and extracurricular activities are aimed at expanding the opportunities of young women for life, professional growth and stable work. ALT tracks the number of applications, as well as the number of accepted and incoming women, in order to maintain gender balance in the student body. ALT staff and teachers: 65% are women. About 50% of the senior scientific staff are women.

Gender equality activities

The university measures the number of women entering. The Marketing Department measures women’s applications, enrollment statistics – annually, in September, reports to the Academic Council. Every year at the beginning of October, ALT sends a report to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which measures the number of women’s applications, the number of accepted/enrolled and completed studies. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan annually monitors the number of applications of women, the number of accepted/enrolled and the percentage of completion of studies at the country level.

According to the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan – the Bureau of National Statistics, the gross enrolment ratio of higher education by gender in Kazakhstan was 70.35% in 2020 (Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 4: 4.3.2 Gross enrolment ratio of higher education by gender (administrative data)). At ALT in 2021, the student enrollment rate was 27.5%.

More than 85% of ALT scholarships are allocated to students. From 2016 to 2020, ALT implemented a project for Afghan women, during the 4 years of the project, 3 women were trained in the basic ALT program and received scholarships under interstate agreements. The academic scholarship is designed to give Afghan women and girls the opportunity to get an education and acquire professional skills. The initiative to improve the access of Afghan women to quality higher education is aimed at increasing the sustainability of life in Afghanistan, as well as in the entire Central Asian region.
