Today, humanity is witnessing one of the most severe environmental crises in its history. Each year, over 2 billion tonnes of solid waste are generated worldwide, natural resources are being rapidly depleted, and the scale of production and consumption has long surpassed the ecosystem’s capacity for self-renewal. Recognising this reality, ALT University has placed the UN’s 12th Sustainable Development Goal — Responsible Consumption and Production — at the very heart of its mission.
📍 Ecohub — A Pathway to Environmental Awareness
On 18 May 2026, students of ALT University visited the Ecohub environmental centre in Almaty. The event was far more than a field trip — it was a hands-on learning experience designed to introduce future professionals to the practical mechanisms of sustainable development.
Ecohub is one of Kazakhstan’s leading organisations actively implementing the principles of the circular economy. Here, waste is not simply discarded — it is transformed into a resource. The company collects, sorts and processes recyclable materials, giving them a new lease of life.
🎓 What Did the Students Learn?
♻️ The Culture of Waste Separation. Paper, plastic, glass and metal — each material has its own recycling pathway. Proper sorting can enable up to 70% of waste to be reused. Students observed the process first-hand and took an active part in it.
🌍 The Consequences of Overconsumption. The linear “buy–use–discard” model is rapidly exhausting the planet’s resources. Students examined the concrete impact of consumer behaviour on the climate, soil and water systems.
💡 Making Mindful Choices Every Day. Reducing excess packaging, choosing reusable items, saving energy — these are small yet profoundly important steps. During the event, students learned practical techniques they can apply at home immediately.
🤝 A Circular Economy in Action. Ecohub specialists presented the company’s working model, demonstrating the full cycle — from waste collection to finished product. For the students, this served as a living example of a sustainable business model.
💬 The Significance of the Event
This visit gave students the opportunity to engage with environmental issues not through textbook pages, but through real life. Responsible consumption is not solely the duty of governments or large corporations — it is the everyday choice of every individual.
ALT University students who learn to be responsible consumers today will become responsible entrepreneurs, engineers and managers tomorrow. Because a sustainable future lies in the hands of an informed and conscious generation.
