On September 24, 2026, ALT UNIVERSITY hosted a round table with students of the military Department on the topic: “We are for a nuclear-free world. 35 years since the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.” The event helped to raise students’ awareness of the significance of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, the historical consequences of nuclear testing, and Kazakhstan’s role in promoting peace, security, and nuclear disarmament.
During the round table, the participants discussed issues of international and regional security, the responsibility of States to preserve peace, the importance of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as the role of the younger generation in shaping a culture of peace and rejection of weapons of mass destruction. The event became particularly important in connection with the training of students of the military department, since security issues require not only professional training, but also awareness of responsibility for maintaining peace, observing international law and protecting human life and safety.
The round table is directly related to the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 16 “Peace, justice and effective institutions”, aimed at promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, ensuring access to justice and creating effective, accountable and inclusive institutions. In this context, the discussion of Kazakhstan’s historical experience, the consequences of nuclear tests, and international security issues contributes to the formation of values of peace, responsibility, legality, and respect for international security mechanisms among young people. Following the results of the event, it can be noted that the round table contributed to the development of students’ civic responsibility, increased knowledge about the historical heritage of Kazakhstan and strengthened understanding of the relationship between national security, international cooperation and sustainable development.
