Department History

Brief Historical Overview of the Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications

  • The department was established in 1977 and was called “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communications”;
  • In December 1980 (by Ministry of Railways Order No. K-411444 of December 18, 1980, No. 1534), the “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communications” department was divided into two independent departments: “Automation and Telemechanics in Railway Transport” and “Radio and Electrical Communications”;
  • By Order No. 185 of the AlIIT dated November 9, 1987, the “Automation and Telemechanics in Railway Transport” department was merged with the “Radio and Electrical Communications” department and renamed “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communications in Railway Transport.”

From its founding to the present day, the department has steadily developed and trained professionals in the following specialties:

  • “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communications,” which includes two specializations: “Automation and Telemechanics,” “Information Transmission Systems,” and “Radio Communications and Radio Navigation”;

Since November 2005, the “ATS” department was divided into two independent departments and became known as “Radio Engineering and Telecommunications.”

After the split, Associate Professor Zh.M. Bekmagambetova, Ph.D. (Eng.), became the Head of the Department.

After the split, the following specializations were offered in the Department of Radio Engineering:

  • “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communications,” specialization “Information Transmission Systems,” and specialization “Radio Communications and Radio Navigation”;
  • “Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications.”

From 2016 to 2021, Associate Professor M.A. Lipskaya, Ph.D. (Eng.), headed the Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications.

Since 2021, the department has been renamed “Telecommunications and IT Engineering.”

Since September 15, 2021, the department has been renamed “Information and Communication Technologies.”

Since September 2025, the ICT department has been divided into two independent departments and has become known as “Radio Engineering and Telecommunications.”

Following the division, PhD Musapirova G.D. has become the head of the department.

Currently, the department trains bachelors in the following bachelor’s degree programs:

– 6B06209 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications

– 6B06213 Infocommunication Technologies and Communication Systems

– 6B07198 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Navigation Technologies.

For Master’s degree programs:

– 7M06234 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (research and teaching)

– 7M06233 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (1.5-year specialized course)

– 7M06238 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (1-year specialized course)

Doctoral program:

– 8D06255 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications

– 8D06257 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (specialized).

The Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications trains highly qualified specialists in modern telecommunications technologies. The department’s educational programs are focused on developing fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

  • Telecommunication systems;
  • Radio communication systems with mobile objects;
  • Satellite and cellular communication systems;
  • Radar and navigation equipment.

Organization of the educational process in the workplace

In order to gain practical experience and skills, students of the OP – 6B06209 – Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications in the core disciplines at the Almatytranstelecom enterprise, a branch of Transtelecom JSC, undergo practical training in the established and functioning branch of the VOLS Laboratory department of the RT department and the Almatytranstelecom branch.

The aforementioned branches conduct educational internships and practical classes in real production conditions, and also organize introductory excursions for junior students.

1) The list of organizations where branches of departments are open

The Almatytranstelecom branch of Transtelecom JSC has been closely cooperating and participating in the organization of the educational process for over 15 years.

Students are given the opportunity to undergo educational, industrial, and pre-graduation practical training on cable sections of the main and secondary-local levels, as well as work with active equipment using modern digital technologies.

In the 2024–2025 academic year, branches of the RT Department were opened on the premises of RTel Group LLC.

Top managers of JSC NC KTZ, leading specialists of the Almaty branch of JSC Transtelecom – Almatytranstelecom, as well as representatives of RTel Group LLP, KnewIT SHP, QSTEM LLP and other companies in the field of IT and telecommunications conduct guest and leadership lectures for our students, and are also involved as scientific supervisors and reviewers of diploma theses.

5) Practice bases

Upon completion of the training course, a mandatory internship is required. This internship fits into the overall training framework, reinforcing the knowledge gained in the theoretical course and facilitating the smooth adaptation of future specialists to the upcoming work environment.
