History of the department

The department “Rolling Stock” was formed in 2014 by merging two producing departments “Locomotives” and “Wagons”.

The heads of the department “Rolling stock” at various times were Doctor of Economics, Professor Kuanyshev B.M., Doctors of Technical Sciences, Professors Abdullaev S.S., Solonenko V.G., Candidates of technical Sciences, Associate professors Chigambaev T.O., Ibraev Zh.S., Tokmurzina N.A., PhD, associate professor Bakyt G.B. Currently the department is headed by Candidate of technical Sceinces, associate professor Ashirbayev G.K. The main task of the department is to provide theoretical and practical training of specialists with professional knowledge, educational skills in accordance with the approved state standard of higher professional education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Department “Rolling Stock” is one of the main structural divisions of the Academy, carrying out educational, methodological, research work among the teaching staff and students, as well as training scientific and pedagogical personnel and improving their qualifications.

The teaching staff of the department represents a highly qualified, professional team with various scientific background, taking an active part in the scientific life of the Academy. The teachers of the department develop various research topics, make presentations and reports at intra–university, national and international conferences and seminars. The materials of many scientific studies and practical recommendations formed the basis of scientific and methodological manuals, articles and reports, as well as patents for inventions. The main scientific direction of the department is the study and research of the technical characteristics of newly purchased rolling stock, both in the CIS and in non–CIS countries, as well as the study of the possibility of upgrading the existing car fleet and extending its service life. A special place in the work of young scientists of the department is given to research on the interaction of the “wheel – rail” system, which is reflected in periodicals, scientific conferences and international symposiums.

The department “Locomotives” was established in 1977. Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Chernyakov A.A. was invited from Kharkov to the position of head of the department “Diesel Locomotives and diesel economy”. Before that, the cycle of disciplines of the future department was part of the department “Transport Engineering”.

The Department of “Locomotives and diesel locomotives” was headed at various times by: Chernyakov A.A., Tselikov V.V., Aleynikov Yu.P., Kaspakbaev K.S.

In April 1983, the Department of “Electric Traction” was established and headed by Candidate of technical sciences, Associate Professor M.K. Shalabaev. The department of “Electric traction” consisted of two specialties: “Power supply of railways”. At the beginning of the academic year of 1983, the department was fully staffed with a teaching staff: from the Omsk Institute of Railway Transport Engineers to the Alma-Ata Institute of Railway Transport Engineers were elected Candidate of technical sciences, associate Professor Varva Valery Ivanovich, Candidate of technical sciences, Associate Professor Paramzin Vasily Porfirievich, as well as two teachers: Stepanova Natalia Grigoryevna, Belyaev Viktor Ivanovich. From Sverdlovsk, according to the competition, the following were accepted: Associate Professor An Vladimir Andreevich and senior lecturer, Candidate of Technical Sciences Salyanikov Alexander Makarovich. At the same time, associate professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences Solonenko Geliy Ivanovich and senior lecturer Viktor Ivanovich Samsonov were accepted to the department.

In connection with the transition of associate professor M. Shalabaev to deputy head of the Kazakh Railway, the department was headed by Associate professor V.P. Paramzin from November 1983 to December 1988. In January 1990, from the Department of “Electric Traction” were separated independent department of “Power Supply of Railways”, headed by An.V.A. and the Department of “Electric Locomotives and electric trains”, headed by Associate Professor M.K. Shalabaev.

At one time, Candidates of technical sciences, associate professors Kirpichnikov B.N., Igin B.N., Ilyin E.I., Staradubtseva V.A., Basalaev V.D., Dolinsky V.S., Shabanov V.A., Baiboshkin V.A., Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Sabetov A.S. worked at the department.

In order to improve the quality of the teaching staff of the department in 2006, graduates of the department Alizhan A.A., Alzhanov B.B., Zhakupov K.B., Ibraev B.M., Chigambayev T.O. were sent to the Moscow State University of Railway Engineering for postgraduate studies.

The department “Wagons” was one of the oldest producing departments of KazATC. The department was organized in 1976, when the Alma-Ata Institute of Railway Transport was opened, and at the beginning was called “Wagons and Carriage Facilities”. M.K. M.K. Shalabayev was appointed as a head of the department.

In order to strengthen the department there were invited leading teachers from other universities of the USSR, as well as there were attracted promising graduates of transport universities. So by the end of 1977 followings started working at the department: Candidate of technical sciences, associate professor V.M. Andreev, who is a graduate of the Leningrad Institute of Railway Transport Engineers; Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor B.A. Akatushkin, who is a graduate of the Omsk Institute of Railway Engineers; Associate Professor A.G. Milashich is a graduate of the Kharkov Institute of Transport Engineers. In 1977 – 1978, teachers Kuzmenko V.N., Mikhailin E.P., Yerimbetov A.D., Kukeev M.K., Ivanitsky R.P. started working at the department.

In 1977, the Faculty of Mechanics produced the first graduation of students in the specialty “Wagons”. Graduates of the department work in many car depots and car repair plants of the Republic, as well as in other railway transport organizations. More than 80% of the first heads of the CPD and CRP of JSC NC “KTZ” are graduates of the department.

Currently, the Rolling Stock Department is staffed with highly qualified teachers, it has well-equipped educational laboratories and computer classes. Students make extensive use of personal computers when completing term papers and theses. According to its composition, the department is considered one of the best among the railway universities of the CIS countries, conducts active research and has close ties with transport universities of the CIS countries.

Currently, the staff of teachers of the department is 17 units. The department employs 2 Doctors of Technical Sciences and 1 PhD, 10 candidates of technical sciences, 2 senior lecturers and 3 teaching assistants.

The Department of «Rolling Stock» trains bachelors in the specialty 6B07116 – “Wagons”, 6B07117 – “Locomotives”, as well as training masters in the specialty 7M07145 / 7M07146 – “Rolling stock of railways”, doctoral students in the specialty 8D07159-Transport, transport equipment and technology.

In 2023, was opened a new educational program 6B07137/6B07173— “Rolling Stock Engineering”, which includes three educational trajectories.
