On 28 October 2026 at 15:00, the Department of Computer Science at ALT University held a master class for the Optimisation Methods course. Gulnar Dyusembekovna Apselemova, Senior Lecturer and Master of Economics, conducted the session in room O209. Students from groups IS-24-6k, IS-24-4k, IS-24-1k, IS-24-5k, IS-24-3k and US-IS-25-1k took part in the master class.
The master class focused on mathematical modelling and solving a technical inspection problem. A computer inspection scenario illustrated how to allocate the working hours of a specialist and an assistant efficiently within a limited budget.
The session covered defining decision variables, constructing an objective function and expressing resource constraints as inequalities. Desmos was used to visualise the feasible region, while Python supported the comparison of objective function values at corner points and verification of the result.
The materials included examining how an increased budget changes the optimal solution and applying the method to a new set of inputs. The group task combined model construction, a graphical solution and verification in Python. Mentimeter supported a review of key concepts, and Padlet provided a space for final reflection.
The session used active learning methods, including problem-based learning, Think–Pair–Share and group work. Students’ work was assessed against criteria covering mathematical model construction, analysis of the graphical solution, use of Python and interpretation of the result.
The master class supported United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education, and Goal 9, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Combining mathematical methods with digital tools helped develop students’ analytical and computational skills.
