On April 30, 2026, the Institute of Military Affairs held a commemorative event marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. The institute paid tribute to retired Colonel Viktor Arkadyevich Timoshenkov, a veteran of the Afghan war and a liquidator of the Chernobyl accident.

Event Highlights:

  • Invaluable Insights: Colonel Timoshenkov shared his firsthand experience in radiation protection, psychological resilience, and the strategic measures taken during the liquidation efforts.

  • Tactical Education: Integrated into the “General Tactics” course (Topic: “Nuclear and Chemical Weapons”), the session featured demonstrations of protective suits and monitoring devices used both during the disaster and in the modern Kazakh army.

  • SDG Integration: The event aligned with UN SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 15 (Life on Land), and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

The program concluded with a formal ceremony awarding Colonel Timoshenkov jubilee medals and a celebratory concert organized by the IMA students.
