On February 10, 2026, the Department of Transport Systems and Life Safety of the Institute of Transport and Construction at ALT University named after M. Tynyshpaev organized a Mini-Olympiad titled
“Sustainable Mechanical Engineering and Safety of Production Systems (SDGs — Sustainable Development Goals)” for 2nd–3rd year students of the Mechanical Engineering program.

The main objective of the event was to develop sustainable engineering thinking among future engineers, strengthen competencies in safe and environmentally responsible production, and integrate the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into engineering education.

The competition was held in a team-based format and aimed to enhance engineering analysis, teamwork skills, and the ability to make technological decisions considering environmental and social responsibility.

Special attention was given to the following SDGs:

  • SDG 3 — Good Health and Well-being (safe working conditions);
  • SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation (environmental safety in production);
  • SDG 9 — Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure;
  • SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production;
  • SDG 13 — Climate Action and reduction of environmental impact

Competition Structure

Round 1 — Test Stage
Participants completed theoretical tests covering SDGs, industrial safety, energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and occupational safety culture.

Round 2 — Practical Engineering Blitz Case
Teams analyzed specific SDG-related tasks and proposed engineering solutions aimed at sustainable, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible manufacturing.

Round 3 — Laboratory Practical Case
Students examined production scenarios involving machine tools and automated systems, identified potential hazards, proposed safe technological solutions, and developed ideas to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Educational Impact

The Mini-Olympiad contributed to developing students’ engineering mindset and understanding of sustainable manufacturing and production safety. The event supported the integration of global sustainability principles into the educational process and prepared future engineers to design safe, innovative, and environmentally responsible industrial systems.
