The master class, conducted within the framework of the disciplines “Organization of the production process of an energy company” and “Contact network and power transmission lines”, was organized on a competitive basis with the participation of the faculty of the Department of Energy and representatives of the branch of JSC NC KTZ — the Almaty branch of the backbone network, as well as specialists of the Almaty Power Supply Distance (EC-19). The event was timed to coincide with the implementation of SDG 17 — Partnership for Sustainable Development and aimed at strengthening cooperation between the educational environment and industry organizations.

The master class included theoretical and practical parts.

1) Theoretical Part:

Study of the overhead power supply and sectioning system. Each team was given a station diagram, which the participants used to independently install the overhead power supply.

Selection and justification of overhead power supply fasteners and connecting elements. The tasks were determined using photographs: participants identified fasteners both on actual overhead power supply sections and on training stands.

2) Practical Part:

Completing organizational activities: issuing work orders or instructions, and issuing work permits.

Participants issued work orders in accordance with the process chart and performed the following tasks: replacing a vertical string and a defective clamp; inspecting and adjusting consoles, brackets, and clamps; checking the condition, adjusting, and repairing the compensating device.

Technical Activities:

Participants prepared the work area: performed the necessary shutdowns and took measures to prevent erroneous or unintentional switching on of the switching equipment; posted prohibiting signs; checked for voltage on live parts; and installed grounding.

Conclusions and practical significance:

This competition covered theoretical and practical skills aimed at imparting knowledge and professional experience to students. Participants completed a number of technological processes together with representatives from EC-19. A protocol for negotiating operational switching between an electrician (work supervisor) and a power dispatcher was developed and implemented.

Students gained practical knowledge of power supply to the overhead contact network, studied the design of its fasteners, and mastered the technological and operational work involved in servicing overhead contact network devices. Personal protective equipment (insulated gloves and hard hats) was used during the work, and participants were also familiarized with the requirements of the Safety Regulations for the Operation of Consumer Electrical Installations.
