Brief Historical Overview of the Department of Telecommunications

• In 1977, the department was organized under the name “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communication”;
• In December 1980 (Order of the MPS No. K-411444 dated December 18, 1980, No. 1534), the department was split into two independent departments: “Automation and Telemechanics in Railway Transport” and “Radio and Electrical Communication”;
• By Order of AlIIT No. 185 dated November 9, 1987, the department of “Automation and Telemechanics in Railway Transport” was merged with the department of “Radio and Electrical Communication” and named “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communication in Railway Transport.”

Since its establishment, the department has steadily developed and trained professionals in the following specialties: “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communication,” which included two specializations: “Automation and Telemechanics,” “Information Transmission Systems,” and “Radio Communication and Radionavigation.”

In November 2005, the department was divided into two independent units and renamed “Radio Engineering and Telecommunications.” Following the division, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Zh.M. Bekmagambetova became the head of the department.

After the division, the department’s academic degree programs included:

• “Automation, Telemechanics, and Communication” (specialization “Information Transmission Systems” and major “Radio Communication and Radionavigation”);
• “Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications.”

From 2016 to 2021, the Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor M.A. Lipskaya.

In 2021, the department was renamed “Telecommunications and IT Engineering.”

On September 15, 2021, the department was renamed “Information and Communication Technologies.”

In September 2025, the ICT department was split into two independent structures and named “Radio Engineering and Telecommunications,” and currently operates as the Department of Telecommunications. Candidate of Technical Sciences G.D. Musapirova became the head of the department after the division.

Today, the department offers Bachelor’s degree programs in:

• 6B06213 Infocommunication Technologies and Communication Systems
• 6B07198 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Navigation Technologies

Master’s degree programs:

• 7M06234 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (scientific and pedagogical, 2 years)
• 7M06233 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (profile-based, 1.5 years)
• 7M06238 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (profile-based, 1 year)

Doctoral (PhD) degree program:

• 8D06255 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications
• 8D06257 Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications (profile-based)

The Department of Telecommunications trains highly qualified specialists in modern telecommunications technologies. Its educational programs focus on building fundamental knowledge and practical skills in:

• telecommunication systems;
• mobile radio communication systems;
• satellite and cellular communication networks;
• radar and navigation equipment.

Special emphasis is placed on training professionals for the transport and logistics sector. Graduates possess strong competencies in designing, operating, and servicing telecommunication networks, including railway transport infrastructure.

The department actively develops research activities, collaborates with leading national and international organizations, and prepares students for successful professional careers in the fast-evolving field of radio engineering and telecommunications.

In order to gain practical experience and skills, students of the OP – 6B06209 – Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications in the core disciplines at the Almatytranstelecom enterprise, a branch of Transtelecom JSC, undergo practical training in the established and functioning branch of the VOLS Laboratory department of the RT department and the Almatytranstelecom branch.

The aforementioned branches conduct educational internships and practical classes in real production conditions, and also organize introductory excursions for junior students.
