History of ALT UNIVERSITY
The foundational origins of ALT University lie in the year 1931, witnessing the strategic deployment of a satellite institution belonging to the Central Asian Institute of Railway Engineers (with its central administration in Tashkent) within the burgeoning urban landscape of Alma-Ata. This establishment occurred under the direct auspices of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway, conceived as a direct response to a critical exigency: the pronounced dearth of adequately qualified human capital essential for both the infrastructural development and the ongoing operational integrity of the railway network. The initial pedagogical focus encompassed core engineering disciplines deemed indispensable for the seamless functioning and strategic expansion of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway, specifically track engineering, mechanical systems, and railway operations. This pivotal juncture represented a fundamental stride towards the systemic institutionalization of advanced engineering education meticulously tailored to the complex demands of the transport sector within the evolving socio-economic fabric of Kazakhstan.
In 1957, the institution underwent a transformation into a training and consulting center. A decade later, on October 1, 1967, it was reorganized as the Alma-Ata branch of the Tashkent Institute of Railway Engineers. Subsequently, on May 20, 1976, the Alma-Ata Institute of Railway Engineers was established, evolving from this branch.
Further structural changes occurred on January 1, 1991, with the founding of the Alma-Ata Automobile and Road Institute, based on the Alma-Ata branch of the Ust-Kamenogorsk Construction and Road Institute.
A significant milestone was reached on May 7, 1996, when the Alma-Ata Institute of Railway Engineers and the Alma-Ata Automobile and Road Institute were consolidated to form a single, comprehensive institution aimed at preparing specialists for Kazakhstan’s transport sector. This new entity was named the Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communications. On May 23, 2000, the Academy was renamed in honor of Mukhamedzhan Tynyshpayev—Kazakhstan’s first railway engineer, a distinguished public and political figure, and a key contributor to the conception and construction of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway.
Between 2000 and 2020, the Academy underwent extensive transformation, characterized by the adoption of modern educational standards, the broadening of international cooperation, and the integration of digital technologies into the learning environment.
On January 27, 2021, the institution was officially re-registered as the “Academy of Logistics and Transport” (JSC), reflecting its evolving mission and structure. Most recently, on April 22, 2024, the Academy attained the status of JSC “Mukhamedzhan Tynyshpayev ALT University”, marking a new chapter in its development.
