Department History

Brief historical background of the Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications:

• In 1977, a department was organized and was called “Automation, Telemechanics and Communications”;
• In December 1980 (Order of the Ministry of Railways No. K-411444 dated December 18, 1980 No. 1534), the Department of ATS was divided into two independent departments: Automation and Telemechanics in Railway Transport and Radio and Electrical Communications;
• By order of the AlIIT No. 185 of November 9, 1987, the Department of “Automation and Telemechanics in Railway Transport” was merged with the Department of “Radio and Electrical Communications” and was named “Automation, Telemechanics and Communications in Railway Transport”.

From the day of its foundation to the present, the department has been systematically developing and producing professionals in the following specialties:

• “Automation, Telemechanics and Communications”, which includes two specializations “Automation and telemechanics”, “Information transmission systems” and “Radio communications and Radio Navigation”;

Since November 2005, the « ATS » Department has been divided into two independent departments and became known as Radio Engineering and Telecommunications.

After the division, PhD, associate professor Bekmagambetova Zh.M. became the head of the department.

After the division, the specialties of the RT department became:

• “Automation, telemechanics and communications” specialization “Information transmission systems” and specialty “Radio communications and radio navigation”;
• “Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications”.

From 2016 to 2021, the Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications was headed by PhD, Associate Professor M.A. Lipskaya.

Since 2021, the department has been renamed to “Telecommunications and IT Engineering”.

As of September 15, 2021, the department was renamed “Information and Communication Technologies”.

Since September 2025, the Department of ICT was divided into two independent departments and became known as Radio Engineering and Telecommunications.

After the division, the head of the department became a candidate of technical sciences, Musapirova G.D.

Today (2025), the department prepares bachelors in bachelor’s degree programs:

— 6В06209 — Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications
— 6В06208 — Telecommunication systems and railway networks.

For Master’s degree programs:

— 7M06234 — Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications (scientific and pedagogical)
— 7M06233 – Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications (specialized)

According to the doctoral educational program:

— 8D06255 — Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications.

The Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications trains highly qualified specialists in modern telecommunications technologies. The department’s educational programs are focused on developing fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

• telecommunication complexes;
• radio communication systems with mobile objects;
• satellite and cellular communication systems;
• radar and navigation equipment.

Particular attention is paid to training specialists for the transport and communications industry. Graduates of the department possess competencies in the application of modern methods for the design, operation, and maintenance of telecommunications networks, including in rail transport.

The department actively develops research activities, collaborates with leading domestic and international organizations, and prepares students for successful professional careers in the dynamically developing field of radio engineering and telecommunications.

In order to gain practical experience and skills, students of the OP – 6B06209 – Radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications in the core disciplines at the Almatytranstelecom enterprise, a branch of Transtelecom JSC, undergo practical training in the established and functioning branch of the VOLS Laboratory department of the RT department and the Almatytranstelecom branch.

The aforementioned branches conduct educational internships and practical classes in real production conditions, and also organize introductory excursions for junior students.
