Department History

The Department of General Engineering dates back to 1931, with the establishment of the academic consultation center of the Tashkent Institute of Railway Transport Engineers, the Alma-Ata Automobile and Road Institute, and subsequently the TashIIT branch and the Ust-Kamenogorsk branch.

Key Stages of Formation and Development:

• 1969 — The Chemistry section was separated from the Physics Department, forming the Department of “Physics and Chemistry.”

• 1971 — The Department of “Higher Mathematics and Theoretical Mechanics” was established at the Almaty branch of TashIIT, providing instruction in all mathematics and mechanics courses.

• 1973 — The department split into two independent units: “Physics” and “Chemistry and Materials Science.” Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences M.A. Pak was elected Head of the Physics Department (leading it from 1976, when AlIIT was founded, until 1983).

• 1976 — Following the opening of AlIIT, the Departments of “Higher Mathematics” and “Theoretical Mechanics” were created.

• 1977 — The Department of “Applied Mechanics” split from “Higher Mathematics” and was headed for several years by A.K. Kayupov.

• Departments of Physics and Chemistry: Cand. Sc. S.E. Kozhirova (from 1983), Cand. Sc. Zh.A. Sarsenbayev (1985–1996), Prof. L.(M).B. Bektenov (appointed Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs in 1999), Dr. Sc. E.M. Menligaziyev, Dr. Sc. M.Kh. Kim, Dr. Sc. A.M. Alimzhanov, Dr. Sc., Prof. M. Iskakov, Cand. Sc., Assoc. Prof. L.S. Verveykina.

Modern Transformations:

• 2004 — The Physics and Chemistry departments merged under Dr. Sc., Prof. S.M. Malgazhdarov into the Department of “Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Mechanics” (PCMM). In 2007–2008, it was headed by Cand. Sc. E.A. Dyachenko.

• 2008 — Following the merger of PCMM and Higher Mathematics, the Department of “Natural Science Disciplines” was formed. Headed by: Cand. Sc., Assoc. Prof. S.T. Almagambetova (2008–2010), Cand. Sc. E.A. Dyachenko (2010–2019), Cand. Sc. E.B. Tasbolat (2020–2021).

• 2021–2022 — The Department of “General Engineering” was established, led by PhD Dr. Akdana Tursynkhanovna Tashimbetova.

• Since 2022 — The department has been led by Cand. Sc., Associate Professor Patam Turganovna Akhmetova.

• In 2026 — Reorganized as the Department of General Engineering under the structural update. Head of the Department: Cand. Sc., Associate Professor Patam Turganovna Akhmetova.

Structure and Course Cycles: The Department of General Engineering includes two primary course cycles:

• Applied Physics Cycle: Applied Physics, Applied Physics 1 & 2, Electrodynamics, Quantum Physics, Building Physics.

• Engineering and Business Mathematics Cycle: Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics 1 & 2, Business Mathematics 1 & 2, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Differential Equations.

Laboratory Facilities: The Department operates 4 specialized laboratories:

• Mechanics and Molecular Physics

• Electricity and Magnetism

• Oscillations and Wave Optics

• Quantum and Atomic Physics

Faculty Profile: Currently, 67% of the Department’s faculty hold advanced academic degrees:

• 4 Associate Professors;

• 4 ALT Associate Professors (degree holders);

• 9 Master’s degree holders;

• 3 Lecturers without advanced degrees.

Academic Organization and Strategy

Educational and scientific activities at M. Tynyshpayev ALT University JSC are conducted by highly qualified faculty. Training is offered across 36 Bachelor’s, 29 Master’s, and 8 PhD programs.

• Department Mission: Achieving high-quality specialist training through the integration of education, science, and industry, strengthening the material-technical infrastructure, and implementing modern teaching methodologies.

• Department Goal: Enhancing the public status of mathematical and physical education, preparing highly qualified specialists adaptable to changing socio-economic conditions, and improving educational quality control mechanisms.
