History of the department

In 1976, the Almaty branch of the Tashkent Institute of Railway Engineers was transformed into the Almaty Institute of Railway Engineers . Simultaneously with the opening of ALIIT, the department “Path and Construction Production” was organized, where civil engineers were trained in the specialty 1209 – “Industrial and Civil Engineering” (PGS) and railway engineers – builders in the specialty 1210 – “Railway construction, track and track facilities” (SZhD).

In 1996, the Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communications named after M. Tynyshpaev was established on the basis of the Almaty Institute of Railway Transport Engineers  and the Almaty Automobile and Road Institute (AADI).

In 1977, two departments were established on the basis of the department of “Path and Construction Production”:

1. The department of “Path and track management”.
2. Department of Industrial and Civil Engineering.

In the period 1978-2008, the department of “Way and Track management” trained railway engineers – builders in the specialty – “Railway construction, track and track management”.

In 2008, the department of “Path and Track Management” produced the first graduation of bachelor builders in the specialty 5B072900 (050729) – Construction, specialization 5B072900 (050729.05) – Construction of roads and airfields, profile 5B072900 (050729.05.02) – Construction of railways.

In 2009, the department of “Transport Construction” (“TS”) was established on the basis of the department of “Path and Track management” (“PPH”).

In 2010, KazATK made the first admission of students (undergraduates) to the specialty 5B074500 (6M074500) – Transport construction.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, the departments of “Transport Construction” and “Rolling Stock” were merged into one “Mainline Engineering”.

Since September of the 2022-23 academic year, the department of “Mainline Engineering” has been divided into two departments: “Construction Engineering” and “Rolling Stock”.

Since September of the 2024-25 academic year, the Department of “Construction Engineering” has been divided into two departments: “Transport Construction” and “Architectural and Construction Engineering”.

Currently, the department is fully staffed with highly qualified teachers. The department has a well-equipped educational and laboratory base and a computer classroom. The department is considered one of the best among the departments of the way and roads of universities in the CIS countries, conducts active scientific research and has close ties with universities in the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as near and far abroad.

The main activities of the laboratory “Testing paths and artificial structures”

Assessment of reliability and stability of artificial structures in the transport industry

• Inspection and testing of bridge structures, culverts and other artificial structures on railways and highways, with an assessment of the technical condition and determination of conditions for passing mobile loads, development of recommendations for troubleshooting and prolongation of the safe operation of the structure;
• Development of monitoring systems for structures and structures;
• Training, specialization and internship of bridge specialists.

Engineering and geological surveys

• Field studies of soils;
• Laboratory studies of soils and groundwater;
• Studies of the soils of the foundations of existing buildings and structures.
