History of the department
In 1996, by a decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on the basis of two universities, AADI and AlIIT was transformed into the Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communications (KazATK).
1977-2009 – Department of “Highways” — trained engineers in the specialty “Construction of highways and airfields”.
In 2008, the department carried out the first graduation of bachelors in Educational programs 5B072900(050729.05) – “Construction of highways and airfields” and 5B072900 (050729.05.02) – “Construction of railways, track and track facilities”.
In 2009, the department of “Design, Construction and Operation of highways” was transformed into the department of “Transport Construction”.
2010 – KazATK accepted the first undergraduates in the specialty 5B074500 (6M074500) – “Transport construction”.
In December 1993, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a specialized Council was opened by 21.01.01 at ALIIT for the defense of candidate’s dissertations in the specialty 05.22.06 “Railway track”, in 2003 – for the defense of doctoral dissertations.
The department was renamed “Transport Construction” in 2009.
In the 2021-2022 academic year, the departments of “Transport Construction” and “Rolling Stock” were merged into one “Mainline Engineering”.
Since September of the 2022-23 academic year, the department of “Mainline Engineering” has been divided into two departments: “Construction Engineering” and “Rolling Stock”.
Due to the increase in the number of students of construction and architectural educational programs, in the 2023-2024 academic year, the Department of Construction Engineering was divided into two departments.
Since September 2024, the department is called “Architectural and Construction Engineering” and trains bachelor’s degree specialists in educational programs:
- 6B07130 ‒ “Highways and airfields”;
- 6В07324 ‒ “Construction of Highways and airfields”;
- 6B07131 ‒ “Linear pipelines”;
- 6В07322 ‒ “Construction of Oil and Gas Facilities”;
- 6B07339 ‒ “Construction of oil and gas facilities”;
- 6B07329 ‒ “Construction of industrial and civil buildings and structures”;
- 6B07330 ‒ “Architecture of buildings and structures”;

- 7M07159 ‒ “Transport structures” (scientific and pedagogical, 2 years);

The Department will commence instruction under new educational programs starting September 2025:

- 6В07177 – “Oil and Gas Transportation Engineering (NTI)”;
- 6B07183 ‒ “ Smart Roads: digital technologies in transport structures”;
- 6В07348 – “Construction of Highways and Airfields (SADA)”;
- 7M07351 ‒ “Transportation Construction Management” (profile, 1 years)”.
Currently, the department is fully staffed with highly qualified teachers. The department has a well-equipped educational and laboratory base and a computer classroom. The department is considered one of the best among the departments of highways of universities in the CIS countries, conducts active scientific research and has close international relations with transport universities and research institutes of the CIS, with production, as well as with academies of transport and informatization of the Russian Federation.
The main activities of the laboratory:
Assessment of reliability and stability of artificial structures in the transport industry
- Inspection and testing of bridge structures, culverts and other artificial structures on roads and railways, with an assessment of the technical condition and determination of conditions for passing mobile loads, development of recommendations for troubleshooting and prolongation of the safe operation of the structure;
- Development of monitoring systems for structures and structures;
- Training, specialization and internship of bridge specialists.

- Field soil studies;
- Laboratory studies of soils and groundwater;
- Studies of the soils of the foundations of existing buildings and structures.
Training of personnel with professional competencies for the automotive industry, which take into account the increasing quality requirements of specialists in the field of design, construction, maintenance and repair of highways and airfields using new innovative technologies.

5) Practice bases
Upon completion of the academic course, students are required to undertake mandatory industrial internships.
